Thats how we built up our empire. The music industry isnt just dying, but what it means to be a recording artist is changing. Technology is making everything cheap, and cheapening everything it touches. Soon the old ways of selling records will be a distant memory, along with magazines, working musicians and employed blue-collar dads. Its not a time to cry about the recession, or urge people to go to their local mom and pops and pick up the new sole & skyrider LP. Technology is working its magic, and instead of being a passenger on its ship, I have decided to plot a new course for myself.

The very fact that I have thrived in this environment still sometimes is a surprise to me. Im 32 today. I put out my first vinyl when I was 16. For me its always been about ethics & passion, doing what felt right in my core and acting on that, whether or not it was the popular or conventionally wise thing to do.

From now on now all my releases will be made available @ soleone.org via my new label Black Canyon Records and exclusively distributed worldwide via Revolver USA. There is an email newsletter list ton soleone.org, if you wish to be kept in the loop on my releases/updates that will be the best place.

What began in early 2009 with theFREEhoudini the monumental mixtape that reunited a dozen of indie hip-hops seminal vocalists now reaches its apt conclusion as ten gifted producers help reinvent the pairs recently released CrownsDown LP.

While that album, in part, paid tribute to raps golden age icons (Gang Starr, Ultramag, Public Enemy), this companion piece finds artists like Baths, Lazer Sword, Buck 65 and Our Brother The Native seizing upon Themselves progressive side to create a document firmly of the future.

The aggressive swagger of the original material courses through CrownsDown & Company, rearing its ugly head early on in Däleks remix of Oversleeping. The New Jersey crew replaces the songs hulking boom-bap with industrial dissonance, clearing the way for Buck to swap the electro-thump of The Mark for crashing drums and squealing punk guitars. Darker and meaner still is Lazer Swords ultra-modern, bass-embraced take on You Aint It.

Other tracks are instilled with the psychedelic fortitude that informs Dose and Jels band Subtle. The men of Notwist appear under the 13 & God guise to create a version of Daxstrong that seethes with Krautrocks groove-steeped experimentalism. Meanwhile, Our Brother turns Roman Is As Roman Does into a sun-spoiled stew of piano, horns and odd effects, and L.A. electronicist Baths recasts Deadcatclear II as bright, glistening and melodic.

Members of Anticons stalwart production team Alias, Odd Nosdam, Bracken deliver their trademark treatments as well, bridging Themselves well-rooted family tree to the fresh faces gathered here an affirmation of Doses long-held tenet that good music leads to good people.

Fittingly, CrownsDown & Company is capped off with a brand new song, ANTartica, that not only pays lyrical tribute to the eight men who moved west to found the label/collective over a decade ago, but to all those with the fire in their teeth not keeping quiet.
