Since 1995, Nicolas Vernhes has produced everybody from the Fiery Furnaces and Cat Power to Les Savy Fav and Ted Leo at his Rare Book Room Studio in Brooklyn. And he has convinced a bunch of artists he's worked with to return the favor, by contributing new material for his new label, Rare Book Room Records.

The label's first release will be a double disc compilation tentatively titled RBR 001 ("til I come up with a better one," Vernhes says) and featuring contributions from Fischerspooner, Animal Collective's Avey Tare, Enon, Blood on the Wall, Tara Jane O'Neil, Black Dice, and yes, a band called the Jewish.

Vernhes has not yet set a release date for the compilation (though he "expects [it] to be ready in the next month or two") "because it is a complicated and time-consuming project." Part of the reason why the process has been so time-consuming is that Vernhes "made sure to record extended intros and outros so the songs merge together into one long, but indexed, piece of music. This solution was developed so that the songs [would] flow into each other organically, eliminating the jarring and sometimes random feel to some compilations."

The tracks already recorded for RBR 001 are listed below in alphabetical order by artist, since the compilation does not yet have a tracklist. Artists who have yet to record include Oakley Hall, Fischerspooner, Enon's Toko Yasuda, Dan Brown, Theo Angell, Holy Hail, Love As Laughter's Sam Jayne, "and probably a few more."

The Silver Jews track was originally the B-side to a UK single from American Water, but other than that, every song on the compilation is previously unreleased.

Rare Book Room's second release will be a full-length by compilation contributors Palm in the Claw.

Exclusive: Van Halen Reuniting With Roth For Tour

Sources tell Billboard.com a contract could be signed as soon as today for Live Nation to produce a 40-date amphitheatre tour by Van Halen this summer, with original frontman David Lee Roth back in the fold for the first time in more than 20 years.

As previously reported, guitarist Eddie Van Halen's 15-year-old son Wolfgang has stepped in for original bassist Michael Anthony in the new incarnation of the group, which also features drummer Alex Van Halen.

Van Halen last toured in 2004 with vocalist Sammy Hagar, grossing nearly $40 million, according to Billboard Boxscore. Hagar refused to collaborate further with Eddie and Alex Van Halen after the tour's completion ("I don't get along with Eddie anymore, and that's all there is to it," he told Billboard.com in August 2005), although he has consistently played live with Anthony in recent years. The warring factions may wind up meeting in public in March when Van Halen is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

"I see it absolutely as an inevitability," Roth told Billboard.com last May of a potential reunion with his ex-bandmates. "To me, it's not rocket surgery. It's very simple to put together. And as far as hurt feelings and water under the dam, like what's-her-name says to what's-her-name at the end of the movie 'Chicago' -- 'So what? It's showbiz!' So I definitely see it happening."

Hagar recently told Billboard.com he was concerned Eddie Van Halen was asking too much of his son to have him join the band and promptly perform in front of thousands of people every night.

"That's a lot of pressure for Wolfie. Just 'cause he's Eddie's son doesn't mean he can go out and play in arenas and perform and entertain an audience for two hours," he said. "I would love to see Eddie and Alex get behind Wolfie, with a kid of his age singing, and produce the record for him and help him launch a career. I'd rather see it go that way than come out and say 'Wolfie's the bass player in Van Halen and maybe singing, too.' Van Halen's got way too much history to have that put on him."

U2 MIGHT think they are a rock band but the rest of the world seems to view their songs as soul music.

First American churches began holding so-called U2 Eucharists - religious services staged around the lyrics and music of the band.

Yesterday, the Church of England revealed it, too, is planning the first British 'U2charist' in an effort to woo young people.

The adapted services are already filling Episcopalian churches in the United States, despite the Pope's condemnation of rock music as "anti-religion".
Now Church of England faithful have been invited to sing and sway along with classics such as 'Mysterious Ways' and 'Beautiful Day' in a Lincoln church in May.

In a bizarre form of mass karaoke, worshippers will be encouraged to sing along as a live band performs covers of the chart hits, while the lyrics are displayed on a large screen at St Swithin's church in the town centre.
The event is to focus on the Millennium Development Goals, which seek to reduce world poverty - a cause promoted by U2 frontman Bono and Bob Geldof.

A sophisticated lighting system will pulse with the beat, while images of those suffering in poverty and drought will fill the screen.

Saisivat levyttää Frendien Pheoben kaikki biisit, takuulla ostaisin. Ihan mainioita lyriikoita. Varsinkin siinä jaksossa, jossa Pheobe esitti lapsille lauluja ja sai nimeä "tätinä joka kertoo totuuden". Oiskohan joku tehny covereita niistä?

Onko muuten kukaan vielä kuullut Hulkkosen Jorin & Jerry Valurin uutta Processory-plattaa? 14. päivä pitäisi tulla ulos Playgroundilla.

Ainakin Imagen arvostelun perusteella vaikutti ihan mielenkiintoiselta. Dualizm oli jo askel kohti lähemmäksi kasarisyntikkapoppia. Processoryn pitäisi jatkaa noilla kasarimusan linjoilla vielä eteenpäinkin, ainakin Imagen arvostelussa viitattiin jopa The Smithsiin. Sinänsä tuossa ei ole mitään yllättävää, sillä Jorihan tietääkseni on jo pitkään ollut The Smithsin suuria ystäviä.

Jorille muuten voisi laittaa tuonne elektronisen musan puolelle topikin, jos vaan jaksaisi.
