finally makes podcast..
zeid did this about 3 months and a half ago.. anyone who listened will recall it was multi-episode.. close to a day worth of broadcasting. no where near this much will be made available, i'm told.. BUT! here is the first taste.. i recall it being inquired about a lil while back.. 30 minutes here.. another two hours should go up today.. more in the future..

Caroliner interview with Berkeley Art Museum promotional incicent
A group effort from the main cusp of the band who had time for this last minute interview, gave the interviewer (a Berkeley grey block of angled concrete) as much information as possible. Please take notes, add to your own thoughts, and put them in a place you can find easily.

1. How would you describe the Caroliner experience to a novice?
Caroliner tries to recreate the starvation hallucinations, cabin fever dream-nightmares, and ergot poisoning that one would find rampant in the 1800s. Before there was distribution and proper use of soil, there were mass amounts of terrorized minds and stomachs deluded into horrors of prairie life. Often staring at the sun created a halo and pattern glow that we have pushed into the present.
2. Where does the name come from? What's it's significance?
Caroliner is the name of the singing bull of the 1800s; all of our songs we have put out or use onstage are products of the throat of this, the first living bovine musical hit machine.
3. What inspired the sets and the costumes?
We will use a lot of 1800s imagery to create the effect of "being there" then-time. The costumes all have semi-specific Caroliner characters portrayed by each human member, turning them into a walking musical god of some sort.
The organist you may remember from the song "Land of Disturbances". The only thing missing from his ensemble is the body of a tornado and a few giant patterned mud horses that pour out massive amounts of entrails. Also the leather cloud, the hoops, and the rhythmic peg legs are missing, we hope you can over look that part though.
The drummer tries out his clothing and face portraying the song Muzzle Medicine. This is what happens when you try eating everything in the feedbag to become as strong as an ox. You may end up playing drums. This, and people will paint your personae with bright rosy horse cheeks mistaking your drying out long face for a pet-thing.
4. Is the band a Bay Area institution?
Caroliner has been everywhere playing for over 27 years, but have probably played the most concerts in the bay area. The amount of "institution" is only equal to the amount of members who can be gestured to as hitherto "institutionalized". The librarians and historians acknowledge Caroliner by attending the few concerts every year. However, other fun seekers often ignore this elderly ensemble, as it doesn't fit with a formula of popularly approved dance bodgie music.
5. What's the most important thing to have at a Caroliner show? (for you or the audience)
It helps us to bring instruments, which can be a problem with the mass of cumulation hoard that we have to tote to every show. It helps for the rest of the world to bring the admission fee, a wide assessing of the entire Caroliner music releases (for the sing along factor), and, if the ergot poison dream hell is too bright for the chance observer, a hand to palm the eyes from the intesity of the 1800s.

it is an immense joy to announce that next week, friend Arvo has agreed to devote his FM timeslot (usually occupied by the incredible "Delirious Insomniac" to a broadcast of the remnants of last September's epic "Caroliner Rainbow Assortments of 1800s Steam Driven Insults and Waterless Vitals" on Radio23.org, which some of you may recall..
well, it has been (and is being) reassembled and embellished with further materials, thus spawning Edition II:

it's a Caroliner radio special which adheres to more of a playlist format, drawing from a variety of recordings... there will be an assortment of live material, but there is no focus on that above the studio stuff.
to clarify further: back in later September and early October i did a multi-episode radio special in celebration of the tour you indicated. it was fairly well received, and its remnants (maybe 1/4 of what was originally aire on Radio23.org) have been reassembled and packaged- along with some fresh morsels, for FM broadcast.. by way of invitation from great guy, WLUW's Arvo Fingers.
and thus we have the second edition: Caroliner Rainbow Color Apart Each Holding Diseases and Mold...
a simple celebration of all things singing bull.

"You're To Make Young Gems" hits things off on an Anton Lavey-style funeral organ note - dark, drunk-sounding and filled with clitter-clattering, slightly reminiscent of Nick Cave's "The Carny" but -- and you won't believe this -- less pretentious. Eric Cohen is swatting maniacally at the strings on a detuned guitar, Brandan is jazzing down the clarinet, and if you listen real real real close, you'll notice that the song starts over halfway through. You see, the musicians hadn't recorded enough music to fit all the lyrics in. If Grux and Lara's backing vocals sound like they were recorded through a small metal pipe leading from the control room to the recording room, that's because they WER!

"Dumhevae" is a truly disturbing conglomeration of psychotic aural ingredients thrown together with no set time signature and topped with layered vocals intoned in the voices of frightened children. The recurring piano motif, recorded by Brandan at Grux's house en route to the studio while the rest of the band waited in the car, sounds so disembodied and ghostly, you'll swear that it's being played by that house in The Amityville Horror! Somewhere in the mix, you'll also find Mark Davies' trombone and Jess's viola. Scary!

RICHARD Scarry, that is!!!

"Loin Loin's Doings" is another demented meisterwerk of organ darkness, and features the first example of a recording technique that would soon be explored much more fully: the antique wire spool recording. Here it's only used for Grux's vocals and Lara's drums. But doesn't it sound eerie though? I mean, the way I'm describing it?

"Guilty Wind Or Wing" is a sloppy redneck country blues rock track from New Orleans, and not at all my type of music. Of note is the fact that Eric performed his part on a child's three-piece drum set while Lara and Brandan threw handfuls of silverware at him. Grux swung a mop with a microphone on it whapping Eric in the head to get the drum sound just 'so'.

"Crown Of Awful Ways" is one of the greatest, most driving, uptempo Caroliner songs to date. Even my wife was dancing to its bass/drums cowpunk choogle and pedal steel action. It was recorded in Brandan's bedroom at 1:00 AM, much to the delight of his "straight" neighbors with their three-piece suit. Another great production trick shows up here -- they recorded a bunch of surface noise from an old 78RPM record and eq'd Grux and Lara's vocals to make it sound as though the vocals were pulled from a separate record; the surface noise comes and goes with the vocals to suggest a turntable needle being lifted. It really works!!!

Side B joins the party with a big messy din called "Spiddletop Knuck Knuck." But within that din lies the musical fruits of brain power. In order to get a gamelan sound, Brandan recorded a percussive track of bicycle spokes. Then he did a couple tracks of faux-Tibetan ritual growling by holding a vibrator against his throat (hopefully he CLEANED it first! Ha! A little "smelly pussy dildo" humor for the penis gallery!), added in another recurring piano bit influenced by Dinah Shore's recording of "Blue Canary", and apparently attempted to emulate Peking opera music with clattering percussion and Lara's reverbed backup vocals. Margaret is playing a completely awesome Eddie Van Halen-style busy bass line, but unfortunately it's buried under so much crap you need a stethoscope to hear it.

"Rainbows Made Of Meat" is another of the very few actual ROCK songs recorded by Coalinga. Distorted bass stomp, garage trash sound = Nuggets, by Jove. This was actually one of the earliest Caroliner songs, dating back to 1984 when Gregg Turkington of Bee Gees reviews fame was the band's drummer.

The title track ("Strike Them Hard - Drag Them To Church") is a mix of the inspired (Grux sang his preacher vocals with his head in a salad bowl filled with water, Brandan added four tracks of beautiful Jackie Gleason-style exotica guitar) and the aggravating (aforementioned redneck choir, two tracks of annoying organ garbage in the incorrect key, a playing time of 9 million years). The song was conceived as a sort of Southern Baptist prayer meeting, and believe me you me - it's every bit as long and tiresome as one. You do get a quick break, however, in the form of a mid-song intrusion song called "Snakebites." An ugly stupid wah-wah hard rock guitar line is buried in hiss as Brandan and Grux yell "Ouch!" at various tape speeds. Presumably this is the point of the Southern Baptist meeting when they start handling snakes? I don't know. Do Southern Baptists handle snakes? I know Jews don't -- they just MARRY them! (?)

We're nearing the end. Open your eyes wider. The rural accomplishment "Coal Mound" features Jess on picked banjo, Eric making elephant noises on a trumpet and the most adorable group vocals to be found on any record ever made. I won't even describe them, they're so adorable. This is another song where the musicians didn't record enough music for all the lyrics. In this case, they recorded an additional version and spliced it in; the difference in sound quality is obvious and hilarious.

The finale is "Horse Flats," a Butthole Surfers/Cows-style distorted swooping bass headbanging smash-rocker - complete with saxophone through a distortion pedal. You can tell that this one was a monster when performed live (apparently it often lasted up to ten minutes or so - and when you hear it, it's easy to see why!), but the drums are buried in this mix so it's a bit less powerful than it could be. Also, the dual shrieked vocals are a nightmare.

Get Yr Eyeballs Blown with Caroliner

The Bay Area has long been a haven for costumed bands (think The Residents, The Mummies, Knights of the New Crusade) but there is no other group that turns its attire into intense visual art quite like Caroliner . The mysterious conceptual act which plays a truly psychedelic mix of industrial, folk, noise and rock jams completely overtakes whatever environment they're performing in. Really, the music is great and all, but you can't live in San Francisco without being witness to the amazing attention to detail this crew puts into designing an alternate universe from the stage. A live show is a rare event, but if you haven't seen these guys, your next chance is this coming Wednesday, March 16, when they take over Cafe du Nord . (The gig is listed with their full name, Caroliner Rainbow Shade is Natural Composure).

epäilen että on soittanut viulua jollain noista myöhemmistä levyistä. ja joo, keikka oli ihan jees, viuludronea luupattuna, välillä aikamoista sirinää lähti laitteista ja joku kosketinsoitinkin oli, sitten vikana mainion hypnoottinen viulunnäppäilybiisi, jonka päälle vedettiin sitten lopuksi jousella ääntä, mutta loppu ei kyllä ihan noussut sen kummemmaksi. eli loppupeleissä ei tää nyt mikään maailmoja mullistanut esitys, mutta ihan plpl kuitenkin eli tulipa nähtyä. yhden levynkin ostin (box of the last help), täytyy kuunnella joskus.

Pari vuotta ollut luovaa taukoa tämän bändin kuuntelusta, mutta tänään duunissa tuli tsekattua kuvat ja psykokarkin youtube-linkit edelliseltä sivulta. Aivan mahtavaa menoa. Muistin taas, että täähän on ihan paras bändi.
