A New White on kova! En osaa tähän hätään vertailla For Hero For Fooliin, mutta pidin siitä ehkä jopa enemmän.

WHY? - Alopecia
ABR0080
Release date: 03.11.08
Two years after wooing critics with their beloved Elephant Eyelash, WHY? return, third LP in hand. In short, Alopecia is a collection of hard rhymes and raw-spun songs forced through the stubborn smile of a life-lover scorned and reborn. In long, this is an album of bone-dry jokes, suicides played out in poem, musings on final moments written inside of restrooms, begrudging self-affirmation, and the grit and glories of every day living. Yoni Wolf has returned with the Art of Songcraft tucked under his arm. Inspired as much by MF Doom and Lil Wayne as J. Newsom and Big Dylan, his words roll out bent and beautiful, not unlike the musical architecture that sends those words skyward.
As expected, the WHY? bandYoni, Josiah Wolf, Doug McDiarmidcontinue their calculated blitzkrieg on that self-made jangle-rap, indie pop n roll genre, but the stakes are raised. The boys returned to their Midwest roots for Alopecia, hunkering down in Minneapolis Third Ear studio and inducting a pair of venerable big guns into the band: Fog mastermind Andrew Broder and bassist Mark Bear Erickson. Throwing their samplers to the wind (mostly), WHY? recorded live as a five-piece. By the time the core trio returned to Oakland (where Thee More Shallows D. Kesler engineered a final session), theyd amassed their most immediate and cohesive batch of songs to date.
Alopecia begins dark and triumphant: On The Vowels Pt. 2, Yonis voice comes in strong, sweetly soured like a curdling milkshake. The band lays back for the verseweaving feedback, paced drums and bass, simian beat-boxing and bent guitarthen goes cosmic for the close. Conversely, Good Friday rolls forward on a simple live beat that showcases Yonis rappinest cadence in years as he wears his lowest lows like a badge: It feels exciting/Touching your handwriting/Getting horny by reading it/And repeating, Poor me. These Few Presidents marks a return to the sing-song style over an alternately bubbly and tempestuous sound, before lead single The Hollowsan outsider anthem featuring the ethereal oohs of Nedelle Torissi and beyond-the-grave revelations from Doseonetouches down like a twister.
Throughout Alopecia, WHY? further push the edges of their sound, mastering mood on the time-shifting The Song of the Sad Assassin, going ghostly with Kesler on a textured death rattle called Gnashville, and inflating the warped buoyancy of Elephant Eyelash via Fatalist Palmistry. Likewise, Yoni has honed his poems, evidenced by The Fall of Mr. Fifthsa twisted rap hinting at an inner Mr. Hydethe sleepy existentialism of Brook & Waxing, the oral illustration offered by A Sky for Shoeing Horses Under and the complex cadences found in Twenty-Eight.
It all comes to a blistering crescendo in the albums final triptych. On Simeons Dilemma, Yoni croons to his frequent female muse/antagonizer: Stalkers my whole style/And if I get caught Ill/Deny, deny, deny. He tests the limits of his voice and the extremes of his own character over a note-for-note combination of vibes, harpsichord and piano. And before Alopecia is brought to its eerie end (the suicide-probing outro, Exegesis) were given one more offering of reverse rap braggadocio. By Torpedo or Crohns grooves like a mid-nineties gangsta BBQ jam and peaks with a recurring line from Alopecia: While Im alive/Ill feel alive. Its a fitting final thought, even for an album as complex as thisthat the perfect antithesis to the blunt finality of death is nothing more than claiming the lifeblood that is already yours.
Enjoy.

Son Lux - At War With Walls And Mazes
ABR0082
Release date: 03.11.08
*Pre-order now! Shipping February 29*
At War With Walls & Mazes is a stunning debut wrung from classical precision and good old human gut-wrench. Son Luxs first is a heady collection of songs breathing the same air and sharing the same space; painted from the same palette but set apart stilleach is a distinct region of one broad, heaving sonic landscape. From afar, its an environment characterized by would-be contradictions: the austere grandness of chamber music undercut by undulating electronica; the intricately orchestral assembled via hip-hop collage; a day-plain pop ease silhouetted by deep soul. Up close, its clear that these contradictions are what hold the entire work together.
The prologue begins with the warm quaver of harmonica and a cold, androgynous breath: Put down all your weapons/Let me in through your open wounds. Theres a burst of drum, a piano hit that overwhelms the ears, and were on At Wars terra firma. First song Break is quiet and composed, punctuated by stabs of chaosreversed instruments, errant electricity, an angry crowdand given moody depth by the voice of Son Lux, which returns raw and whisper-pretty like Will Oldhams. Next, Weapons flow in and out itself, building static, crystalline keys and thick bass into a pile of sharp edges that bounces like a rubber ball. An angelic cry breaks the rhythmic reverie and the snapping, cracking soundscape goes Richter. Conversely, Betray lays a slinky Portishead sulk for its bedrock, then morphs into a laidback, flute-textured upbeat. Stay counters this with a swarm of organ and violins, and a deep, unexpected blues.
The picture is always shiftingsongs starting on a blast or ending in a whirling climb, occasionally dwelling in a single mood, but never succumbing to traditional structure. Theres Tell, which feels intimate, comprised of subtle tones, naked keys, low buzzing slide bass and voice sounding like a transmission from a tin-lined burrow. While the next plot over, Wither is a note-smashing hulk of machine crunch and skittering percussion, technically complex and seriously loud. Son Luxs lyrics don't distract from the journey. Rather, the one and two-line snippets wind their way through the albums space like mantras to be picked up or passed at will. In Raise, a macabre poetry moves with the music, coming in dulcet over bleeding sax, then getting swept up by swirling strings and pulsing electro. On Stand, a single unexplained sentenceYou stand between me and all my enemiesis repeated ad infinitum, gaining in meaning even as its subducted under the piano-driven epic. As various permutations of voice, music and noise emerge, one imagines the Notwists Markus Acher lost in the bowels of Radioheads Pyramid Song. This is a very good thing.
After this undeniable apex, At War With Walls & Mazes approaches its quiet close. War is a sleepy overture to Son Luxs wide embrace, glowing warm and full until white light gives way to the epilogue, and the albums only outright motif: the Weapons melody, first heard with the prologues opening line. Then, Son Lux asked us to drop our weapons and let him in; now, leaving this place, his apparent plea seems much more like an invitation.

[quote:585c58e779]Will Oldham, Andrew Bird Drop in on New Dosh Record
It isn't enough for the word "wolf" and variations thereof to ruthlessly dominate band nomenclature in this century. Now the lupine lingo is finding a place in album titles as well!
Enter Wolves and Wishes, the fourth and latest official album from percussion whiz and Andrew Bird bandmate Martin Dosh. The proper follow-up to 2006's The Lost Take arrives May 13 on that clearinghouse of all things eclectic, Anticon. And while Dosh could certainly conjure a full-band sound all lone wolf stylee, here he's recruited a pack of collaborators.
Bird contributes his trademark violin stylings to "Don't Wait for the Needle to Drop" and "Kit and Pearle", while Fog members and associates turn up on "Don't Wait" and the sorta title track "Wolves". Elsewhere, Odd Nosdam lends some "tuneful noise" to "Keep Up Appearance". And then there's the granddaddy of guest appearance-makers, Will "Bonnie 'Prince' Billy" Oldham, who sings on "Bury the Ghost".[/quote:585c58e779]
