tossa vielä kevin ayersin haastis vuodelta 2003:
HAS THE ALBUM GOT A NAME ?
The working title is `The Unfairground'
there's a song of that name
on it. I started it twice now, and am now abandoning it until
probably October. It's because I was trying to produce it myself and
I can't play, sing, write, arrange, produce and look after the
musicians' egos at the same time ! I definitely need a spare hand on
that so I've just given it up. The songs are there.
WHO'LL BE DOING THAT ? I HOPE SOMEONE NICE. I READ YOU WERE WORKING
WITH MICHAEL DE ALBUQUERQUE'S SON
That was the first time. He was a perfectly good engineer but there
was too much of an age gap in terms of his ideas and my ideas.
DOES SOMETHING NEW HAVE TO HAVE A LINK WITH YOUR HERITAGE, WHAT
PEOPLE EXPECT, OR IS IT A CLEAN SLATE EVERY TIME ?
I certainly don't go in with a clean slate. I mean, basically the
idea from the record company and the producer was to try and make a
more modern, more contemporary image to reach a wider audience, but
the way they want to do that is by trying to stick something on
someone that doesn't belong at all. And I am quite happy to try out
new sounds and things, this that and the other, but I don't
the days
of me reaching a much wider audience are probably gone, but who
knows?
MUSICIANS YOU PLAN TO USE ?
Using the guys and some different people. A mixture of some here and
some there, you know. I can't drop names. October's still a long way
away. The songs are there I just haven't found the `songness', to do
them right in a way that I feel proud of.
SONG TITLES ?
`Brainstorm', `The Unfairground', `Geraldine'
I don't have a set
list in my head. I think there's even one called `I Love You'
(laughs).
WILL YOU PLAY ANYTHING NEW TONIGHT ?
No. I refuse to do brand new stuff because people steal music these
days. I'm getting really sick of that. One bloke with a tape recorder
puts it on the internet and people download it. I've decided only do
stuff that is established.
WEB SITE FIND IT USEFUL ?
I have to admit I'm not particularly proud of the fact that I am
computer illiterate. It's done by other people. I have no love of
computers at all. But yes, as a tool I can see it's perfectly valid
for information gathering
and booking air tickets. But as a social
accessory it's not for me. And neither is the mobile phone! All
perfectly useful I'm sure, everyone has a good justification for
having one, but
DO YOU FEEL ALIENATED BY THE CURRENT MUSIC SCENE ?
I don't relate to the current music scene at all, mostly because
there's very little music in it. It's all videos. If you take away
the video and just hear the record there's not much going on. I don't
say that because I'm older, I don't find very much music anymore.
It's all very, very, identical, cloned music coming out, it doesn't
do anything for me.
IF SOMEONE UPDATED ONE OF YOUR OLD SONGS IN A NEW STYLE, WOULD YOU
APPROVE ?
I'd approve because it would make me money! (Laughs) But my songs
don't lend themselves to that kind of stuff, I don't think. I tried
once - they tried doing it a couple of times - but it doesn't work.
My songs are too personal.
I've never had a hit record so obviously I don't play popular music
in inverted commas. I've always appealed to a small group of people
who like something off the mainstream.
WHEN YOU FIRST CAME ON THE SCENE YOU WERE BRACKETED WITH SYD BARRETT
AS BRIGHT HOPES FOR BRITISH MUSIC.
Ray Davies was mentioned too. There was definitely a school,
musically, with others whose names I can't remember immediately, and
there was a particularly British school of songwriting. It didn't
travel very well, except to Europe - the English speaking countries
like Belgium and Holland. We're all contemporaries.
TRAGICALLY, SYD'S LOST TO MUSIC, RAY'S MADE A POT WRITING COMMERCIAL
SONGS AND YOU COME SOMEWHERE INBETWEEN ?
Yes, to be positive. (laughs)
COULD YOU HAVE LOWERED YOURSELF TO BANG OUT A FEW `YOU REALLY GOT
ME'S TO MAKE THE DOSH ?
There's nothing wrong with `You Really Got Me', it was a great song.
BUT THEY DIDN'T PLAY ON IT
Could be...who cares? It seems to me that era is far more interesting
particularly for those eccentrics, the English songwriters. But I
don't even live in this country anymore and I don't listen to current
pop music. So I could be completely wrong, there could be a bunch of
younger people out there doing it. I just don't know - yet. My
youngest daughter is 24 and she says people are going back to my era
of music and listening to those people instead of the plastic boy and
girl bands.
HARVEST FIRST FOUR ALBUMS ARE COMING OUT AGAIN. DO YOU APPROVE OF
THAT ?
I approve, but have no choice in the matter. They own the catalogue
and they do it whenever they feel like it. It's out of my hands.
STILL HAPPY WITH THAT MUSIC ?
I did an interview in Newcastle, where we played last night. They
played these things back and I thought wow, it's so different to the
way I play today. It sounds old fashioned and very slow and very
British I think it's among the stuff that I'm proud of.
ENO NICO & CALE WAS THAT AT YOUR INSTIGATION OR WAS IT SOMEONE'S
BRIGHT IDEA ?
It was Island's bright idea. I don't think it quite came off the way
it was supposed to come off, but it was an event. We were all on the
same record label together.
DID YOU KNOW THEM ?
Our paths had crossed many times and I'd played with them
individually and on tour with their different bands.
WAS THERE NOT A HYDE PARK CONCERT WITH THOSE GUYS ?
There wasn't with that line-up, it was with my band the Whole World.
CURRENT BAND
They function in Belgium as the Starvin' Marvin Band, and they play
as a band and they also play in various combinations. They've been
backing me for around ten years now. Marvin has been a good friend of
mine for ten years. He plays keyboard with me, though usually guitar.
His surname is Siau.
I can't remember why we started touring together. Someone probably
said hey, we've got a tour for you, you need a band. The Wizards of
Twiddly I enjoyed very much. They happened to be on the same bill as
me and my band. They said they knew a lot of my music so I said I'll
jam with you, being in a good mood at the time. We did and we liked
each other, so there you go.
ANYONE YOU'LD LIKE TO PLAY WITH THAT YOU HAVEN'T ?
Not off hand, I can't think. There are lots of individual musicians
whose names I can't immediately think of at this time. I haven't seen
Robert (Wyatt) in years. I've lived out of the country for 25 years
now. I don't see them.
CANTERBURY SCENE - DO YOU RECOGNISE IT AS SOMETHING TO DO WITH YOU ?
I think it's a lot to do with me, a lot to do with Robert Wyatt, Mike
Ratledge and later on Caravan. The Canterbury Scene meant that there
was a bunch of musicians of different generations following each
other . It started off with a group called the Wilde Flowers and this
split and became different formations; that led to the Canterbury
Scene.
CARAVAN ARE STILL OUT THERE
.
I heard they went to the States recently which is amazing.
ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THE LIMITED INROADS YOU'VE MADE INTO AMERICA ?
There again, I did some stuff in Los Angeles quite recently. In the
big towns I'm all right but in central America forget it, except
Cleveland which is the arch hub of Anglophiles.
ARE YOU CARRYING ON TOURING AD INFINITUM ?
The next project is to get this album done which I will do this
autumn, and presumably there will be some touring. We'll see what the
album does.
TITLE TRACK - OBVIOUSLY IMPORTANT
I don't know if it's very original. The actual song, I'll tell you an
anecdote. Being a bit stuck for words these days, having said just
about everything I have to say, I used a combination of the William
Burroughs cutup method and chess clues, which have very weird
phrasing. I just took a bunch of chess clues, with very weird
combination of words, and turned them into a song. It worked, and I'm
very pleased with the song.
CHESS CLUES ?
What am I talking about? Crossword clues
very cryptic ones, the ones
that leave you baffled.

[quote:1982202f06]Kevin Ayers and The Whole World's 'Hyde Park Free Concert 1970' finally sees release Feb 4.

Ostin tosiaan viime viikolla sen Kevin Ayersin Hyde Park live CD:n, hieno on, äänenlaatu ei paras mahdollinen, mut ei paskimmastakaan päästä. Eikä liveissä aina ihan priima ääni mun mielestä edes pidä olla.
Popparin setä kertoi mahtavia uutisia; Kevin Ayersilta tulee pian neljän CD:n boxi!! En löytäny netistä mitään tietoa tosta, eikä Popperimieskään tienny yhtään millasesta ylläristä on kyse. Hitto ku sais jostain biisilistan.

Hassua miten vanha biisi Clarence on.

En muista yhtään millanen kolmonen on, mutta eka ja toka muistuttaa vähe Pink Floydin Piperia, mutta vähemmän popimpaa. Nurinkurista. Tai jotain. Emmä osaa selittää nyt ainakaan Housen aikana.
