Marking 40 years of The Jesus And Mary Chain, ‘Glasgow Eyes’ was recorded at Mogwai’s Castle of Doom studio in Glasgow, where Jim and William continued the creative process that resulted in their previous album, 2017’s ‘Damage and Joy’, becoming their highest charting album in over twenty years. What emerged is a record that finds one of the UK’s most influential groups embracing a productive second chapter, their maelstrom of melody, feedback and controlled chaos now informed more audibly by their love for Suicide and Kraftwerk and a fresh appreciation of the less disciplined attitudes found in jazz.

Jim Reid says, “But don’t expect ‘the Mary Chain goes jazz.’ People should expect a Jesus and Mary Chain record, and that’s certainly what ‘Glasgow Eyes’ is. Our creative approach is remarkably the same as it was in 1984, just hit the studio and see what happens. We went in with a bunch of songs and let it take its course. There are no rules, you just do whatever it takes. And there’s a telepathy there - we are those weird not-quite twins that finish each other’s sentences.” ‘Glasgow Eyes’ not only extends The Jesus and Mary Chain's story, but feels simultaneously like a return to roots. From the incendiary ‘Psychocandy’ debut and its classic ‘Just Like Honey’ onwards, the Reid brothers steadily became the misfits who made good without compromise.

THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN – GLASGOW EYES
As early as 2019, it was rumored that the new album by the Scottish indie rock veterans would contain 'some synths'. But no one could have predicted that Glasgow Eyes would be the biggest change since Darklands (1987) - in which the Reid brothers deleted Psychocandy's feedback. Jim and William, both in their sixties, have released an album that will cause a stir not only among their followers, but also within their own ranks. The role of William's guitar - which is decisive for their sound - has been drastically reduced, most songs are heavy on synths and for the first time in a long time we hear William sing again. With some exceptions, most songs are tight, measured and repetitive. Almost cold. But if you pay attention to the lyrics, you will notice something else: Glasgow Eyes is a shuffled table of contents from Jim's biography, which will be released at the end of August. JAMCOD is about the fatal show in 1998, which would paralyze the band for nine years. Chemical Animal describes the demons of addiction that the duo has struggled with since day one and The Eagles And The Beatles is about the bands they grew up with. After getting over the initial surprise, the conclusion is that Glasgow Eyes may be completely different from its predecessors, at the same time it is still so very much The Jesus And Mary Chain.
