A New Kind Of Man
John Foxxs new live album A New Kind Of Man will be released exclusively through Townsend Records on Monday 28th April, 2008. The album was recorded
on the 2007 Metamatic UK tour and features 17 tracks, including the singles Burning Car, No-One Driving and Underpass, as well as B-sides such as
Film One and This City. The artwork is designed by John Foxx and features the classic empty suit image as the cover. The full tracklisting is as follows:
Film One/Plaza/Hes A Liquid/Underpass/Metal Beat/No-One Driving/A New Kind Of Man/Blurred Girl/030/Tidal Wave/Touch And Go/Glimmer/Mr No/This City/My Face/Burning Car/
21st Century
To see the artwork - www.metamatic.com - in the News Section
To pre-order (from Monday 31 March) - www.townsend-records.co.uk
To listen - Ive added two tracks from A New Kind Of Man to this My Space page - A New Kind Of Man and 030.
The live version of A New Kind of Man has broken free to become wild, spinning techno-punk while 030 features a fantastic vocal from John Foxx - rich, plaintive and inhabited with nearly 30 years of experience since the brilliant, stark monotone of the original.
For me thats what this album is all about and is partly the inspiration for the title and artwork - how in autumn 2007 John Foxx put on the old suit and made it fit for a brief moment and then discarded it again as he moved on to new things - though perhaps the suit itself also has a life of its own....

[quote:a8863ced82="Ultravox News"]AN UPDATE ON THE EMI PROJECTS
Tuesday, 8 April 2008
As many of you know, information regarding EMIs planned Ultravox re-releases was recently made known. This is the second major project Extreme Voice has been progressing on EMIs behalf, the first being 'Anthology', and we are now in a position to give a small update on the current position and what the future holds.
EMI are intending, wherever possible, to release double disc versions of the entire Chrysalis-era Ultravox and Midge Ure solo catalogue over the next twelve months as 'Definitive Remastered Editions', in the order in which they were originally released - i.e. chronologically from 1980 to 1988. This second project came out of several conversations we had with EMI at the beginning of March 2006 around the main 'Anthology' release. We can confirm that these re-releases are intended to complement the main project ('Anthology') rather than replace it.
Despite the current industry trends and market conditions record companies are currently operating in, EMI have been tremendously supportive of both projects. The album re-releases are being put out through EMI Catalogue, rather than EMI Gold, and so have benefited from a different perspective and budget, allowing us to 'think bigger' for what we would want these albums to be and include. With a broadly blank canvas, we were initially given a wider brief than we had previously had and we have been encouraged to revisit everything connected with the albums. We have considered and worked incredibly hard to bring a new dimension and ideas to everything you will see and hear on every album, this includes artwork, lyrics, photography and, obviously, the music.
The original recordings will be digitally remastered at Abbey Road Studios in London. The first albums to undergo this process, 'Vienna' and 'Rage in Eden', were transferred from the original production master tapes at the beginning of March. The final track-listings cannot yet be confirmed until the members of the band have listened to, commented on and approved the proposed extra tracks. We will give more details and release dates as soon as they are confirmed to us by EMI.
However, one thing we can confirm is that with the help and support of EMI, 'thinking big' has allowed us to pursue and now be in a position to reinstate the original front cover artwork for the 'Rage in Eden' album. This was withdrawn by Chrysalis after legal issues soon after it was originally released and has been replaced by alternative artwork on all subsequent editions. The process from initial conversations with Peter Saville about identifying the art which inspired the cover, through to our extensive work in contacting the original artist's estate to establish intent and culminating with EMI concluding licensing negotiations for its use took over a year, but we are absolutely thrilled with this achievement and to our now be able to restore the image. Digital downloads of 'Rage in Eden' that will be available online will itself have alternate artwork as the agreement for use does not cover any other editions of this album now or in the future.
We are currently writing a second 'All You Need To Know' piece (the first of which was completed for the Island Records re-mastered albums back in 2007) detailing the full process of the 'Anthology' and remastered album re-releases, and we will publish this on the Extreme Voice website in due course.

John Foxx is currently going through one of his most creative periods in a career spanning four decades. On Friday July 25, he's set to follow the likes of R.E.M. and Elbow by performing at the Apple Store in London, where he's presenting his pioneering film and music project, Tiny Colour Movies. This follows recent appearances with Tiny Colour Movies in Australia's Centre For Moving Image and Barcelona's prestigious cultural centre Caixaforum earlier in 2008.
.. ..
In the autumn he's set to play a one-off set with co-writer and producer Louis Gordon at Cargo, Shoreditch, London to celebrate the release of three albums from his back catalogue The Garden, The Golden Section and In Mysterious Ways - and a new double CD Best Of, Glimmer, all of which will include previously unreleased material. The show too promises to be a bit special, with VJs, DJs and a longer set covering his whole career. Meanwhile, Dub Terror have remixed his classic 'Burning Car' single for a 12inch release later in the summer. ....
.. ..
He's also recently completed a beautiful, long-awaited album with Robin Guthrie (ex-Cocteau Twins) which is due for release in early 2009 and is recording new electronic material with Paul Daley (ex-Leftfield), acoustic-based songs with the actor Vincent Gallo and an ambient record with Steve Jansen (ex-Japan).
As founder and front man of Ultravox! (highlights included 'My Sex' co-produced with Brian Eno, 'Hirohshima Mon Amour', 'Young Savage', 'Slow Motion' and 'The Man Who Dies Every Day') until 1979, and subsequently via his many solo projects, Foxx's work has paved the way for a generation of artists and musicians. His debut solo album, 1980's Metamatic, is one of the most innovative albums in electronic music and was recently described as 'visonary' by the Klaxons. Over the last few years he's experimented as a film-maker, photographer, artist (he had two exhibitions in London last year), lecturer and musician and he's also now developing a growing international reputation as a writer he recently headlined a literature festival in Italy where he read extracts from his unfinished novel The Quiet Man. This text is also going to be featured on a Quiet Man spoken word album due for release in the autumn which brings together many of the city (especially London)-based themes of his work which are becoming increasingly relevant in 2008. ....

[quote:58e88a1cee="Steve Malins"]Metamatic tracks
I've seen a few comments criticising the inclusion of No-One Driving (early version) and Plaza (extended) on the new Best Of, Glimmer. The reason why they didn't go on last year's Metamatic re-issue is very simple - the album was already mastered when this particular version of No-One Driving came from a different source from our own batch of tapes. Meanwhile, Plaza (xtended) had to be re-constructed as there were serious problems with the tape - a job that we didn't have time for last year as the Metamatic shows were booked and the album release date scheduled. We did have time to include a snippet of them on Metal Beat interview album - but they weren't mastered and at that stage most of Plaza was still unlistenable. Also, Metal Beat was turned around very quickly, just in time for the shows because it didn't have to be sold into the shops first. That said there are 23 tracks on the Metamatic re-issue, a lot of work went into it and it's not exactly a ludicrously expensive price either! I don't usually respond to criticism but the reason for it is that all this stuff is an ongoing process. John has stored cassettes, multi-tracks, 1/4 inch tapes, DATs - every format you can think of - over the last 30 years and sadly we don't have the space or the budget to hire every kind of machine at the same time and get everything transfered - though we do our best. Also, we wouldn't be able to work on anything new because we wouldn't have time to do anything else. So, for instance, two weeks ago John and I went through another box of old cassettes that he'd completely forgotten about but had found in storage and amongst other things, we discovered some other bits and pieces from the Metamatic sessions - things that need a bit of work on and some re-contruction but which sound really interesting. Which is why I'm writing this. I think it's a shame if this is to be an ongoing issue. I think Metamatic cd2 sounds great, flows as an album and is a decent length. It's definitive in the sense is the best version to look at and listen to. However, odd bits and pieces may continue to crop up and for the moment I believe the majority of fans want to hear them. Hence the inclusion of Plaza and No-One Driving on Glimmer. If more things turn up, as long as they sound good, they'll go on other compilations, rarities albums, interview albums and so on - I'm not storing them up for another version of Metamatic! The same rules govern all these re-issues. The priority is to make them look and sound as good as possible - other bits and pieces may crop up in years to come but I don't think that should be used as a stick against these albums. I hope you agree. [/quote:58e88a1cee]

[quote:a3616c1a9e="Townsend Records"]'Cinemascope' is the first box set of John Foxx's 30 year career and includes five critically acclaimed albums - 'Crash and Burn' (2003), 'Electrofear' (2005), 'Cathedral Oceans III' (2005), 'Tiny Colour Movies' (2006) and 'From Trash' (2006), plus the full 'Cathedral Oceans' DVD. The box also contains six small art prints of Foxx's work. There's a fantastic range of material across these albums, from the 'Eno-esque' 'Tiny Colour Movies' and 'static beauty' (Mojo) of 'Cathedral Oceans' to the darker 'Crash and Burn', with Uncut enthusing about the latter's 'cruel and twisted' electronic pop, adding - 'Not content with being merely relevant, Foxx is still capable of being very good indeed.' In 2006 'From Trash' received some of the best reviews of his career with Fritz Lang, Bowie and Laurie Anderson reference points in glowing praise that appeared in everything from DJ Magazine to Classic Rock! Nation 12's 'Electrofear' is also included in the package - an extremely rare albums including collaborations between John Foxx and Bomb The Bass's Tim Simenon.
