Having been lucky enough to be sent a copy of the album last week, I thought I'd share my first impressions with you.
The title track 'Brilliant' is, as you will now know, pretty instantly catchy and gets stuck in your head right away. The rest of the album took me a little longer to get into, but I take this as a good sign; some of my favourite albums (like the sublime 'Spirit of Eden' by Talk Talk) were the same.
Having now played it half a dozen times, I'll say this - I love it! It does have the classic Ultravox DNA running through it, but the sound has been brought up to date quite nicely. It has shades of light and dark, Billy's amazing viola and piano, the synth sounds we love, great insistent bass, soaring vocals, Warren's unmistakeable drums... and I'd say there's a little Rage in Eden here and there, a sprinkling of Quartet and even what seems to be a touch of John Foxx in 'Rise'.
So was it worth the wait? In my personal opinion - hell, yes! Come May 28th, put it on, crank up the volume all the way to 11 and enjoy...

Lontoolainen new-waven ja elektronisen musiikin uranuurtajayhtye Ultravox julkaisee tällä viikolla odotetun uuden studiolevynsä Brilliant, ja luvassa on myös liuta keikkoja uuden biisimateriaalin myötä. Muutamia vuosia sitten paluun keikkalavoille tehnyt bändi saapuu syksyllä myös Suomeen kahden vuoden tauon jälkeen. Ultravox nousee Helsingin Tavastian lavalle torstaina 18. lokakuuta. Keikan liput tulevat myyntiin keskiviikkona 30. toukokuuta.
Ultravox aloitti uransa uusromanttisen elektropopin saralla jo 70-luvulla. Yhtyeen syntetisaattorilla, punk-vivahteilla ja glamrockilla maustettu pop on inspiroinut vahvasti lukuisia artisteja ja bändejä ympäri maailmaa aina tähän päivään saakka. Ultravoxin tunnetuimpiin hitteihin lukeutuvat mm. Dancing With Tears In My Eyes, Vienna ja Hymn.
Ultravoxin klassisin kokoonpano, eli Midge Ure, Billy Currie, Warren Cann ja Chris Cross, kokosi rivinsä vuonna 2009 Return to Eden -nimellä kulkenutta kiertuettaan varten. Brittein-saarilta kiertue laajeni lopulta Euroopaan ja sai jatkoa vuoden 2010 puolella. Kiertueen toisen osuuden yhteydessä Ultravox nähtiin kehutuilla paluukeikoilla myös Helsingissä ja Turussa.
Nyt julkaistava Brilliant-albumi on yhtyeen ensimmäinen studiolevy 18 vuoteen ja seuraaja vuoden 1994 Ingenuity-albumille. Levyn ensisingle Brilliant on herättänyt fanien keskuudessa ihastuksen huokauksia, sillä yhtye on pysynyt uskollisena omalle tyylilleen ja soundilleen. Se, kuten muutkin albumin biisit, nauhoitettiin viime vuoden tammi-joulukuun välisenä aikana Lontoossa.

The third John Foxx And The Maths album Evidence is now available as a
pre-order. Due for release on 24 September 2012, the 15-track CD brings
together various new collaborations with The Soft Moon, Gazelle Twin, Xeno
& Oaklander and Matthew Dear from the last 18 months; plus an unlikely
cover version and some recently recorded Foxx/Benge material. Initially
planned as an EP, Evidence grew into an album as it became clear that a
certain mood and style was emerging from The Maths studio in London -
darkly percussive and full of troubled characters and strange, atmospheric
twists. Meanwhile, the sci-fi imagery of Jonathan Barnbrook's artwork is
colder and more ambiguous in tone than his previous work for The Maths.
There's a sense of mystery to the product, as well as to the music.

joo olipas kyllä papat jälleen hyvässä vireessä, keikka oli mahdollisesti jopa parempi kuin viimeksi. 27:ää biisiä ei tosin aivan kuultu, ylläolevasta settilistasta jäi pois visions in blue, white china ja contact. ei myöskään ollut kahta erillistä settiä, vaan kaikki putkeen, ja encore (the thin wall ja the voice) tosi lyhyen tauon jälkeen. aikaa meni sellainen reilu 2 tuntia, mutta rahalle sai vastinetta siinä määrin, ettei enää harmittanut edes merzbown missaus. mukava oli myös huomata, että uuden levyn biisit upposivat klassikoiden sekaan varsin hyvin, eikä tylsiä hetkiä ollut oikeastaan yhtään. huippubiisejä on oikeastaan vaikea valita, mutta ainakin mr. x toimi kuin unelma, lähes pimeä lava ja kaikki koneidensa takana sinisävyisessä valossa, astradyne oli komea, vienna mukavan mahtipontinen ja passing strangersin lopussa midgellä oli kunnon rokkimeininki päällä kitaransa kanssa. tykkäsin myös the thin wallin new wave -henkisestä kitaranrämpytyksestä, ja kyseessähän on meitsin suosikkibiisi muutenkin. billy currie kävi eturivissä soittelemassa viuluaan useamman kerran ja chris cross oli hyväntuulinen ja cool heiluessaan bassonsa kanssa. the voicen lopussa kaikki soitti rumpuja, kuten asiaan kuuluu.

tupa oli suhteellisen täynnä ja jengi lauloi hyvin mukana, joten enpä ihmettelisi vaikka tulisivat vielä joskus uudestaankin tänne. timanttinen keikka, hemmot peuk
