The final album by Sun City Girls was an appropriately ambivalent postscript to a 27-year career defined by indeterminate musical hybrids and profligate surrealism. It was also a haunting masterpiece, a refined, studio-hermetic album that explored a largely underdeveloped side of the band. Although the group's trademarks were present brilliant ethnic forgeries combining cod-Arabic and Indonesian musical modes their seething garage-psych tendencies were smoothed out, domesticated. Somewhere between the channel-surfing Sublime Frequencies of "Ben's Radio" and the elegiac jazz improvisation of "Funeral Mariachi," SCG mapped out undiscovered territory, far from the familiar trade routes. The ghosts of Spaghetti Western and Mondo film soundtracks caravaned through a landscape of exotica, Egyptian surf guitar, Bollywood, and fingerpicked folk. It was the kind of casually eclectic, vernacular travelogue favored by Van Dyke Parks, but with a dark undercurrent of quiet menace lent by a long career of political and aesthetic provocation. Listening to Funeral Mariachi created a profound dislocation, a sense of being simultaneously lost and home. This was the kind of psychedelic mystification that can lead to flashes of satori: When I was dead I looked exactly like you/ Now I'm alive and nothing is true/ This is my name, I have opened my eyes/ To watch you melt in the scissoring sky.

Lovingly packaged within a 26cm x 40cm, gold-foil numbered limited edition of 1000 copies, full colour fold out poster portraying the musician, the work of local artist Hatem Imam, with liner notes in both Arabic and English.
The Bishop brothers continue to dig into the Girls' archives from before Charles Gocher's tragic disappearance in 2007. In this new offering they revisit North African songs from Morocco to the Mid-East and beyond, interpreting them with their own distinctive style.
All tracks on this CD are cover songs from Sun City Girl's repertoire, several frequently performed by the group live for more than 20 years. Several cuts were inspired by found unmarked cassettes and radio recordings made in Egypt and Morocco by Alan Bishop in the early 1980's. The original song titles and composers of the radio-inspired arrangements are unknown.
SCG created their own song titles and rearranged the music, at times radically, to fit their vision. The rest of the tracks are by various artists from the Middle East and North Africa. One track, "Wild World of Animals" is an African piece written for the theme of an American television show by the same name from the 1970s.

"By my count, Baroque Primitiva is the sixth album cut by Alvarius B. and is, like its predecessors, a deep swim through mysterious waters. The 11 tracks here were recorded at various sessions over the course of several years and range from "Humor Police" (a track that imagines what Syd Barrett might have sounded like had he been a devotee of rembetika) to a trippily Beatles-damaged version of "You Only Live Twice" (the sole surviving shard of the aborted Alvarius B. Plays The Bond Songbook project). Baroque Primitiva is the first long-format telegram from Alvarius B. since he lost his mothership (the Sun City Girls, with whom he employed his slave name, Alan Bishop) and it also feels like his most consistently non-acerbic -- perhaps even most beauty-oriented -- work. The songs often have a meditative pace and are filled with gorgeous lo-fi blends of vocals, guitar, bass and keys. Eyvind Kang guests on several tracks, but the bulk of the material was broadcast direct from the naked soul of Alvarius B., which turns out to be a warmer, sweeter place than you might imagine. The record also marks the return of the equally-legendary Poon Village label, whose 1993 Sun City Girls LP, Live At C.O.N. Artists, is a rare and lovely piece of that band's sonic puzzle. Kuten olen varmaan sata kertaa Sublime Frequencies-topicissa hehkuttanut on Radio Moroccolta löytyvän Radio Chechaouenin lopusta löytyvä biisi ehkä paras kappale ikinä. Surullinen, mutta silti lohdullinen. Jotenkin siinä on sellaista yleismaailmallista parhautta. Sanoja ei tarvitse ymmärtää. En tiedä ketään, joka ei olisi biisistä tykännyt.

300,003 Crossdressers From Beyond The Rig Vedalta löytyyvä Sun City Girlsin tulkinta ei ehkä aivan mielestäni yllä alkuperäiseen fiilikseen, mutta onhan se jotain jos bändi ottaa tavoitteekseen tehdä tuollaista jumalaista musiikkia! Funeral mariachia kuuntelin pari biisiä ja pakkohan siihen on lähemminkin tutustua!

jotenkaan en ole edes tajunnut että alan bishop on tehnyt kaksi nimetöntä soololevyä nimellä alvarius b. se eka oli instrumentaalilevy, joka julkaistiin jokunen vuosi sitten uudestaan cd:nä (ABDT-004), mutta sen jälkeen ilmestyi nimetön tupla-lp (ABDT-011), jonka matskua versioitiin sittemmin sunkkarienkin toimesta vuoden -96 legendaarisilla tupla-albumeilla 330.003 crossdressers ja dante's disneyland inferno. tai näin ainakin sanoo sunkkareiden nettisivut, mutta levyn julkaisuajaksi annetaan silti -98 eli mitkä versiot olikaan ensin 017

joka tapauksessa uudelleenjulkaisun paikka, mutta levyn voi ladata täältä.

joo en tiedä kuinka virallinen tää get backin julkaisema uusi vinyyliversio on, mutta tä on pakattu oikeen tommoseen kovakantiseen boksiin, toisin kuin alkuperäinen vinyyli, joka käsittääkseni oli samanlainen kuin 330,003 crossdressers beyond the rig veda, josta mulla on originaali vinyyli ja siinä on sellanen kolmiosainen gatefold-systeemi. ilmeisesti crossdressersinkin uuspainoksessa tämmöinen boksi?

hämärästi muistelen, että kun tämä ilmestyi vinyylinä niin mukana olisi ollut joku bonusbiisi jota ei ole alkuperäisellä tupla-cd:llä mutta en nyt äkkiseltään keksi mikä se olisi, ja löytyykö täältä. aivan mahtava levy joka tapauksessa colorflash
